Atkin is an entertaining raconteur, avid adventurer and a genuine lover of the Himalayas and the people. He empathises with the local cultural ethos of the remote isolated villages where time seems to have stopped and has no relevance. He explores and inquires about the geographical, historical, geological, socioeconomic, aspects of the areas he treks in. He is knowledgeable about the local flora and has close encounters with the fauna. He has tramped in the hills and valleys, eaten the simple fare, suffered the consequences of an immune system naïve of the local microorganisms. He set out on a spiritual quest, succeeded to some extent but found his true love and life partner.
हृदयेश जोशी द्वारा पुस्तक का हिंदी अनुवाद अति उत्तम है: “एक लम्बा सन्नाटा सियार की आवाज़ से टूटा और फिर काकड़ की आवाज़ सुनाई दी । इस सबके बीच दो खूसटों की जुगलबंदी चल रही थी और गायन मोज़ार्ट के पियानो संगीत से काम नहीं था।”
