About the Author:
अनिरुद्ध शर्मा अनिरुद्ध का जन्म मध्यप्रदेश के देवास जिले की बागली तहसील में हुआ था। स्कूली शिक्षा बागली से पूरी करके इन्होंने इन्दौर के गुजराती विज्ञान महाविद्यालय से स्नातक किया। कंप्यूटर में मास्टर डिग्री लेने के बाद कैपजेमिनी सॉफ्टवेयर, पुणे में बतौर सॉफ्टवेयर डेवलपर 7 वर्षों तक कार्य किया। तकनीक के बजाय अनिरुद्ध को कला की दुनिया लुभाती थी, फिर चाहे वो संगीत हो, सिनेमा हो या साहित्य हो । गाने का शौक़ भी था, साथ ही एक ऑनलाइन पत्रिका में फ़िल्म समीक्षाएँ भी लिखना शुरू किया। कुछ फ़िल्मों के लिए गीत लिखे जो बन नहीं पायीं, टीवी सीरीज़ भी लिखी, वो भी प्रसारित नहीं हुईं, पर फ़िल्म बनाने का जुनून बढ़ता ही गया।

It is delightful experience reading the book and knowing about many lesser known & popular artists, their style, lineage and their best work. I got to know some songs which I never heard and I felt how could I missed such a gem.
The book is chronology and covers the entire journey of Indian film music since its inception and how it became part of our everyday life and evolved over time. Book is divided in 7 parts like 7 notes of Sargam and covers each decade in one chapter from 1930 to 1999. I very much liked this idea as other books talks about artist by artists and not gives a holistic idea about how those different great people could have worked together at same time & made such a treasure for the generations. The author genuinely covered not only the facts about musicians, their work but also shared interesting stories, how technology helped the evolution of music and why certain songs were very popular, technical details and how the taste of people changed over time. It seems author himself has good sense of music and knows about various aspects and minute details of music, films and musicians. This is kind of encyclopedia on Hindi film music. Writing style and language is very simple, light yet very impactful and never looses its charm. This books should be read by old and also new generation to know and research on the subject.

हिंदी फिल्म गीत संगीत के बारे में ये एक बेहतरीन पुस्तक हैं। उसे पढ़ने से मुझे गीतों के सर्जन के बारे में बहुत सारी नयी जानकारीया मिली। गानों के बारे में पढ़ने के बाद उनको सुनने का मझा ही कुछ और बढ़ गया है। लेखककी लेखनशैली मुझे प्रभावित कर गयी। इसी श्रृंखलाकी पुस्तक का मुझे बेसब्री से इंतजार है यहीं लेखक की कामयाबी का मापदंड है।

मैं वैसे संगीत का कोई जानकार नहीं हूँ, ऐसा भी नहीं कि संगीत बहुत सुनता हूँ। एक आम श्रोता ही हूँ।
कभी फ़िल्म संगीत के बारे में लिखा पढ़ा भी नहीं, अब आप समझ सकते हैं कि इस किताब को पढ़ने के पहले मेरी क्या सोच रही होगी। मैंने बस चर्चा सुनकर उत्सुकता में इसे उठाया था पर यकीन मानिए मैं कब पूरी पढ़ गया पता ही नहीं चला।
अब जब पढ़ चुका तो मैं जैसे1अलग ही आदमी हो गया हूँ। मेरा गाने सुनने का नज़रिया ही बदल गया, मुझमें अपने आप जैसे संगीत की तमीज़ पैदा हो गई है।
मैं तो ये कहूंगा कि जिसे संगीत का ज्ञान है वो भले एक बार छोड़ भी दे पर जो मेरे जैसे टाइम पास सुनने वाले हैं उन्हें तो ये किताब अनिवार्य ही है।

When it comes to cinema or films, India has the unique distinction of producing the largest number of movies in the world and is also the second oldest film industry in the world, after America!
It has one another unique character which distinguishes it from all other countries of that of film music and songs being a major part of films and story/ screenplay….perhaps more important than the story or plot!

This book from Aniruddh Sharma provides a fairly comprehensive chronological history of evolution, development and analysis of music industry as related to Hindi cinema!
It is unique in the sense that it probably the first book based solely on Hindi films & it’s music artists, singers, composers and musicians that so comprehensively dwells on the history and evolution, not only of renowned names in the industry, but of artists who remain relatively lesser known or unheard of. It is also a virtual treasure trove of unheard facts & anecdotes connected with the journey of film music industry and its artists!….Something that makes it most interesting and a sort of “unputdownable”…..At least to a Hindi cinema buff!!
The language is simple, uncluttered and easy going as though someone is narrating a story! A Sprinkling of unheard unknown facts and anecdotes, all throughout the passages, binds the reader with surprise and interest.
It certainly qualifies as a must-have book for collection for Hindi cinema fans especially those who love Hindi film music and songs.
A second edition and the second part journey of Indian film music from 1999 to 21 century is eagerly awaited!

सिनेमा सप्तक वाकई एक शानदार किताब है. उन लोगों को तो जरूर ही पढ़नी चहिए जो सिनेमा में गीत संगीत की यात्रा पढ़ना चाहते हैं. मुझे आज भी लगता है कि अभिनय सिनेमा जगत का एक ओवरेटेड पहलू है. निर्देशन, गायन, संगीत निर्देशन, कथा पटकथा लेखकों समेत तमाम तकनीकी पहलू और हैं इस सिनेमा के जिन पे और ज्यादा बातें होनी चाहिए. मैंने ये किताब पढ़ी अपने पसंदीदा हेमंत कुमार, आर डी बर्मन और ए आर रहमान के लिए और मुझे यकीन है कि आपको भी आपकी वजह मिल जायेगी.
इस किताब का भाग दो का बेसब्री से इंतजार रहेगा ताकि नाइनटीज के इंडी पॉप और फिल्मों में गजल तथा कव्वालियों के उत्थान, शिखर और पतन पे और जानकारियां मिल सकें.
