‘जहाँआरा : पादशाह बेग़म’ के किरदार के इर्दगिर्द में बुना गया यह उपन्यास यह तथ्य रेखांकित करता है कि नये सिरे से इतिहास के आख्यान बनने का सफर ‘रिक्त स्थानों की पूर्ति’ का बुद्धि विलास भर नहीं होता, यह परकाया प्रवेश और अहंशून्यता की लीला होता है। जिसे कीट्स अपने ढंग से नेगेटिव केपेबिलिटी कहते थे। इतिहास के रोल-कॉल में जिनका नाम भर पुकारा गया, उसका एक धड़कता हुआ सा किरदार भर देना इतना आसान नहीं होता, खासकर जब वह एक स्त्री चरित्र हो। महल से दरगाह, दरगाह से मकबरे तक के सफर में ही जिसने जेहनी तौर पर ये दुनिया और वो दुनिया दोनों ही इस तरह मापी हो जिस तरह गणेश ने माता-पिता की परिक्रमा में मापी थी। ‘फूल डाली से गूँथा ही झड़ गया, घूम आयी गन्ध पर संसार में।’ इस स्वयं समर्थ गन्ध के विस्तार में एक भूमिका निभाएगा यह उपन्यास; खासकर उन संवादों में जो जहाँआरा मुगल सल्तनत के कठिन मोड़ों पर स्वयं से करती है तथा पिता से अलग। अलग ढंग से चार भाइयों से, परितप्त पिता से और सबसे ज्यादा तो अपनी बाँदियों से, खिदमतगार हिजड़ों से जिन्हें जासूसों की तरह हरम में रखा जाता था । इन्हीं में एक हैं मौला बख्श जिनके बारे में कहा गया है कि वे चलते-फिरते खजाना थे-इतिहास, तहजीब, समाज और जंग का पूरा इल्म उनकी यादों में महफूज़ था। दरबार के उमराओं की साजिशें, सल्तनत की नब्ज तक सब कुछ उनकी आँखों ने देखा था। वे जहाँगीर के उस्ताद और रहबर हैं। उन्हीं से गपशप जो होती है उससे इतिहास एक नयी किताब सा खुलने लगता है, पाठक के सामने। यह लेखनीय युक्ति बहुत काम की है। चूँकि दोनों का मिजाज सूफियाना है। गाढ़ी उर्दू युक्तियाँ हरसिंगार सी झड़ती रहती हैं पूरे पाठ में और ज्ञान संज्ञान में कैसे बदलता है, इसका आभास भी होता चलता है। सल्तनत बुलन्दियों पर बैठी दो हस्तियों की सादगी देख रही थी : ‘एक शिकस्ता अपने जेहन में, एक चौकस और खामोश अपने हासिल में।’ हिन्दी भी मुगल शासक जहाँआरा की तरह हर परिवेश आत्मसात करने की जो अकूत क्षमता रखती है, सबसे प्यार करने, सबसे घुल-मिलकर बतियाने का जिगरा रखती है उसकी एक खूबसूरत मिसाल है यह उपन्यास। हिन्दी में चार किस्म के शब्द-कोश उसके चार लिबास हैं तत्सम, तद्भव, देशज, विदेशज और चूँकि आधुनिकता के गर्भ से जन्मी स्वाधीनता संग्राम की भाषा है; कोई इसकी खातिर पराया है ही नहीं। वह जितनी आसानी से सांस्कृतिक हो सकती है उतनी ही आसानी से फारसी। यह लचीलापन, यह सादगी उसकी जहाँआरा वाली ही है। वैसे यह आपको उपन्यास पढ़कर ही समझ में आएगा ।

honestly this was not a very easy read for me but I’m glad I stayed with it. the story of jahanara felt very real, especially her relationship with her parents. some parts around mumtaz’s death really hit hard. language is quite heavy at times so you have to go slow. maybe not for everyone but if you like historical stuff with emotions, this is good.

Is book ko padhne ke baad Mughal harem ko lekar jo ek galat soch thi logo ki woh poori tarah saaf ho jati hai. Wahan sirf ranginiyan nahi thi balki kafi siasat aur zimmedariyan bhi hoti thi jo Jahanara Padshah Begum ne bakhubi nibhayi. Rajeev Kumar ne har ek event ko itne ache se organise kiya hai ki sab crystal clear lagta hai. Unki zindagi ka jo dard tha aur jo unka akelapan tha, woh padh kar aankhein num ho jati hain. Bahut hi honest aur real experience raha isko padhne ka. Main toh kahunga ki jo log sirf action pasand karte hain unhe bhi yeh ek baar zaroor padhna chahiye taaki emotional depth samajh aaye.

Maine is book ko train journey ke dauran padha aur sach batau toh mera safar kab khatam hua mujhe pata hi nahi chala. Jahanara Padshah Begum ki poori dastan itni asardari hai ki aap khoye rehte hain usme. Rajeev Kumar ka jo style hai likhne ka woh kafi calm hai par asar gehra chodhta hai. Unka parivar ke prati jo pyaar tha woh aaj kal ke zamane mein dekhne ko nahi milta. Rishton mein jo jhagde aur phir unko suljhane ki jo koshish hoti hai, woh isme bahut hi relatable tarike se dikhayi gayi hai. Bahut hi pyaari aur genuine kitabein hai yeh, zaroor padhein.

For me, this book was a great study in human resilience against impossible odds. Navigating the shifting loyalties of the Mughal court required immense intelligence, and this book captures that perfectly. The focus on her relationship with her brothers, especially her efforts to guide Dara Shikoh, is filled with dramatic tension. The writing style is casual yet deeply informed, making it feel like a knowledgeable friend is sharing a great story with you. A couple of minor grammar quirks are present, but the narrative strength completely overshadows them. It is a truly engaging read that gives a fresh outlook on the empire.

Jahanara’s role as the chief lady of the empire meant she was essentially a prime minister in her own right, resolving disputes and managing vast wealth. The author explains these complex political manoeuvres in a way that is easy to follow, making the history feel alive. I really enjoyed the chapters on her architectural contributions to Shahjahanabad, showing her lasting physical legacy. The narrative feels very honest and grounded, avoiding any romanticised myths about the court. It is an excellent, informative biography that I highly recommend.

The descriptions of her final years, living quietly after the great civil war, are particularly moving and reflective. The text moves at a steady, observational pace that allows you to absorb the gravity of the events. It is a beautiful, haunting look at a magnificent life.
